Horror movies. Video games. Comics. What do these three things have in common? They're usually aimed at the 18-34 male demographic. Nintendo has destroyed that trend with the DS and Wii (and the Frag Girls have certainly helped as well), while horror movies, well, are still aimed at the same demographic. It seems that comics may be following the example set by video games, and appealing to a wider audience. Both DC (subdivision of Time Warner) and Marvel view females as a tremendous growth opportunity within the industry, according to Wall Street Journal (!). And here I thought that objectifying women was wrong, yet now they're being objectified as a target market. Inspired by the meteoric rise of manga, both industry behemoths are seeing that comics can be more than just "biff" and "zow." This of course makes the deal that DC made with Flex comics (see yesterday's post) make that much more sense. I can't say that I didn't see this coming. Female comic book characters have always been some of the most badass characters created. Vampirella, Shi, Witchblade...Scarlet Witch freaking took out the Marvel Universe by herself. So it was only a matter of time that women became a prime audience. And more power to them. Equality is always a good thing, and its even better when you have the option of discussing comics with your dorky guy friends or your dorky girl friends. Anyways, have a read if you're interested (really, you should read even if you're not interested, because it reflects great strides we're making as a culture). Ladies...
