Heroes Review: Four Months Later...

It was a long summer for fans of what was definitely the breakout hit show of last year, Heroes. Tonight brought that wait to an end. But was it worth the wait? Read on to find out. Consider yourself spoiler warned, as its pretty impossible to review the season premiere without getting into the nitty gritty. First off, the trillion storylines that were happening last year really showed that it was too much, as they didn't even get to all the heroes in the season premiere. The show primarily focused on Claire (her and her father Mr. Benn...sorry, Mr. Butler), as their storyline pretty much ruled the show. We were introduced to three new heroes: Maya, who's power is apparently the stigmata, a Mohinder stalker (never got his name) who's power is the Midas touch and a new friend for Claire, who can fly (which is odd that they've given two people the same power). There was also substantial screen time devoted to Hiro, who learned that his hero was really a white English guy that moved to Japan. And on that note, hasn't Hiro seen Back to the Future? He was in feudal Japan, and he stopped people from killing a guy on horseback, which distracted Takashi, who didn't save the village, and won't fall in love with the blacksmith's daughter. Hiro should know you can't go back in time with the sports almanac. Nathan is alive (big surprise there), and his mom is pissed at him. Hiro's father and Nathan's mother have both been targeted, as apparently they're going to die in 24 hours. Hiro's father ends the show by jumping off the roof where everything happens (with the attacker in tow) and dying on the pavement below, yet when Ando looks over the balcony, he doesn't see the attacker's body. Parkman has adopted Molly, and she's been having progressively worse nightmares, where eyes are watching her. Presumably, the eyes are those of the being worse than Sylar. Mohinder and Parkman share joint custody of Molly, and we learn at the end that Mr. Butler and Mohinder have a plan to take down the entire organization (one can presume that Parkman is on the plan). The show ended with Peter half naked and handcuffed in a trailer at a shipyard in Cork, Ireland, found by three actors with some of the worse Irish accents I've ever heard. And...wait for it...he has amnesia! Seriously, I wish I was kidding. Watching the previews, Heroes has pretty much blown any suspense from last season. Sylar's on a beach, Nikki is alive and ready to kick more ass, and there's more Claire (which is good, because she's definitely easy on the eyes). The show kept its momentum from last season, but that's not necessarily a good thing. I felt the season finale last season was very lackluster, and this premiere really just slowed down the momentum even more. I really don't know if the show this year will be able to recapture the spark that it made last season, and, as I mentioned in many reviews last year, it seems there are just too many main characters, and the show gets crushed under the weight of its starpower and storytelling. Overall, I was disappointed with the season premiere. I'm still going to be watching it, because its still better than a lot of other stuff on TV, but it does have some room for improvement. Rating: 7 out of 10
