The Art of Millarworld Pays Tribute

Fortunately for us, we don't really live in a world where we have to pay tribute to some far-reaching, all-powerful ruler who manages our well-being. Having said that, it doesn't hurt to pay tribute from time to time to those who deserve the praise and many of the artists who have worked alongside Mark Millar fit that bill. To that end, Image Comics is pleased to pay their own sort of tribute to those artists in Art of Millarworld, a limited-edition (250 copies) special edition that will be signed and numbered. Millar has become known in the comics industry for splitting ownership of properties 50-50 with the artists he works with, emphasizing that shared risk should mean shared ownership.

“Every time we put a new book out there we’re a bunch of creators working from our spare bedrooms up against massive multi-billion dollar corporations in New York and Burbank with every advantage that comes with those deep pockets,” Millar writes in the introduction. “Guys like Dave Gibbons or Frank Quitely could draw any book they want at Marvel or DC, so it’s actually very humbling for them to put their trust in me and devote a year or two of their lives to something that’s only previously existed on my scattered notepads.”

Each chapter profiles an artist with an interview and the cover art created for a Millarworld title, in full color and without trade dress. The featured artists are JG Jones, Peter Gross, Tony Harris, Steve McNiven, Leinil Francis Yu, Dave Gibbons, John Romita Jr., Frank Quitely, Duncan Fegredo and Goran Parlov. Also included in The Art of Millarworld are variant covers by twenty-five top-name artists, including Marc Silvestri, Phil Noto, Bryan Hitch, Adam Hughes, Kyle Baker, Amy Reeder and Michael Allred. The dynamic, eye-catching book cover is by Jock.

The Art of Millarworld will be in comic book stores on April 9 and in bookstores on April 22 (Standard Edition ISBN 978-1-60706-826-6, $39.99; Signed and Numbered Edition ISBN 978-1-60706-833-4, $99.99 (limited to 250)). Image Comics is currently publishing the Millar-penned titles Jupiter's Legacy, Starlight and MPH, the title that kicks off a new Millarworld Universe with its first issue on May 21, 2014.
