Henry Cavill Cast as Superman

How was your weekend? Mine wasn't so bad. Relaxed, enjoyed the weekend. Standard stuff. Zack Snyder and the folks at Warner Bros. were a little busier, what with announcing the casting of The Tudors star Henry Cavill as Superman.

The casting pretty much came out of nowhere and there have been whispers that Cavill wasn't even an original choice for the project. It seems that when McG was attached to the reboot he wasn't very high on Cavill, but since DC film godfather Christopher Nolan has come on board he was very impressed with Cavill and his screentest for the role and cast him. Snyder stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Cavill is definitely young so this may actually be a reboot and not a film crammed into the middle of the Superman movie mythos like Superman Returns was. Although, if DC plans on doing a Justice Leage movie it will probably be to their benefit to introduce Christian Bale to Cavill. In response to an interviewer's question about Cavill's casting involved staring blankly at the camera and saying "Well done for whoever you mentioned."

Full press release after the jump.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

  1. Cavill is a great choice… his work is The Tudors was substantial, even though it wasn’t scene-stealing. You can see potential, and he has the masculinity and ‘unknown’ quality that you need for Superman.

  2. Definitely agree. He certainly has the look of Superman and Clark Kent and his work in The Tudors is, indeed, subdued but fantastic. Hopefully he gets a great script to work with that really gets at Superman's best characteristics.
