G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Storm Shadow

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is the next installment of my childhood to get the feature film treatment with the film's release August 7. Because the 80s were such a long time ago and you might not remember who was in your staged Joe/Cobra fights in your backyard, Omnicomic is profiling each character in the upcoming film. So sit back, read on and get reacquainted with some old friends. Real Name: Thomas S. Arashikage (in Japanese, Arashikage literally means Stormshadow) Alias: None known First Appearance: G.I. Joe #21, Marvel comics Actor: Famous South Korean film star Lee Byung-hun Specialties: Ninjitsu, Assassination, Sabotage, Military Intelligence Background: An 8th degree black belt in five different martial arts, Storm Shadow comes from a family of trained assassins who have been in the businesses for nearly thirty generations. That being said, killing is in the man’s blood- his way of living. Arashikage is skilled in the use of a variety of traditional combat weapons- long bows, Samurai swords, throwing stars, nunchaku sticks and others. A loner by virtue of his work, Arashikage uses subtlety and stealth over brute force. Able to move silently and scale walls with his bare hands, this isn’t particularly difficult for him. Different continuities have portrayed Storm Shadow’s past in different ways- ranging from completely unknown to having elaborate detail. Many writers have linked Storm Shadow to Snake Eyes in some fashion- sometimes as old rivals or friends whose relationship turned sour at some point. Storm Shadow is often portrayed as conflicted. Partly, this conflict is one of loyalty- he has appeared as a Joe agent as well as a Cobra one. Internal conflict over his own ideology appears to torture Arashikage as well. Ambitious and headstrong, he seems to wish to test himself against opponents of an equal stature. On the other hand, his desire to win is so strong he sometimes seems willing to take any advantage he can over an opponent (i.e. cheating, dirty fighting, whatever). While the concept of honor seems important to Arashikage, his respect for his opponents only carries so much weight. Check out the other profiles for the characters in the movie.
