Hank McCoy (Before the Fur)

I want to take some time today to talk about one of my favorite characters: Alex Summers, A.K.A. Havok. Why do I love this guy so much? I don’t know, exactly.

I’m just sort of fascinated with his character development, I guess. See, occasionally, I think we get into this thing where people aren’t quite sure what kinds of stories/traits should be used to define a character. So they end up trying a lot of different things to give that character some unique or individual flair. I think this has been done to varying degrees of success or (wild) failure with Havok.

I mean, X-Men is notorious for this kind of stuff--with so many mutants running around, sooner or later people just start slamming them into movies or new comics or whatever and put whatever spin on the character they like. Wasn’t Psylocke a villain in X-3 or something like that? Weird. By the way, in case you don’t know who this guy is (and shame on you if you don’t) Alex is Scott ‘Cyclops' Summers' little brother.

Here’s a few things about him worth knowing: Alex is like a walking power battery. He’s constantly storing energy in his body that needs to be released sooner or later (usually resulting in him blowing something the *%$ up). The thing is, Alex isn’t storing electricity or even radiation. Alex’s body is constantly storing ‘Cosmic Energy’.

For those of you playing at home, that’s the insanely potent stuff that turned Reed Richards and his family into the Fantastic Four.

Needless to say, Alex is a dangerous mutant. With a lot of help from Charles Xavier and others, Alex has been able to better control his powers. Another weird little note? Due to some sort of genetic fluke, Alex and his big brother, Scott, are completely immune to each other’s powers. So they could sit around blasting each other all day and neither of them would feel a thing. Weird, right?

OKAY that’s his powers. But who IS Alex Summers? What makes him tick?

Over the years, we’ve gotten a lot of different takes on his personality. I present for you: Alex’s greatest hits and my thoughts on what has gone right or wrong with this guy…

Image Comics Collects Gladstone's School of World Conquerors

The best supervillain comic in the universe can only be attained one way: through a trade paperback collection. Gladstone's School of World Conquerors is a collection of the comics from Image that includes the first six issues of the series spread over 200 pages.

Mark Andrew Smith has created a way for wicked children to be the stars of the show in his work. With the help of Armand Villavert's artwork, the story is made even more exciting.

"I believe in giving kids a story they can really sink their teeth into and never talking down to them," said Smith. "We also don't believe in skimping on story, so this will be a good solid read for any comics fan, new or old!"

Gladstone's School for World Conquerors is a top-secret academy for the children of the world's greatest supervillains to learn the trade. In it, Kid Nefarious, Mummy Girl, Martian Jones, Ghost Girl and the infamous Skull brothers unearth the School's and their parents' hidden past.

Gladstone's School of World Conquerors Vol. 1 TP will hit stores November 16 for $15.99. Full press release after the jump.

THE BEST SUPERVILLAIN COMIC IN THE UNIVERSE
Image Comics Collects Smith & Villavert's Gladstone's School of World Conquerors

Berkeley, CA – 28 October 2011 – The most villainous clique of kids in all of comics will be graduating to a trade paperback volume of GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS from Image Comics this November. Originally solicited at a lower page count, once the first 6 issues of this critically acclaimed series were tallied up, the collection clocked in at nearly 200 pages!

Mark Andrew Smith, writer of AMAZING JOY BUZZARDS, the two-time Harvey nominated THE NEW BRIGHTON ARCHEOLOGICAL SOCIETY, and editor for the Eisner-winning POPGUN anthology, has devised a dastardly plot to make wicked children the stars of the show in GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL OF WORLD CONQUERORS. And with the help of Armand Villavert's artistic mastermind, the nefarious youths of this series are deftly brought to the page, larger than life and disarmingly adorable!

"I believe in giving kids a story they can really sink their teeth into and never talking down to them," said Smith. "We also don't believe in skimping on story, so this will be a good solid read for any comics fan, new or old!"

Welcome to Gladstone's School for World Conquerors, a top-secret academy for the children of the world's greatest super villains to learn the trade. Join us as Kid Nefarious, Mummy Girl, Martian Jones, Ghost Girl, and the infamous Skull brothers unearth the School's and their parents' hidden past!

Some of the praise critics have given Smith and Villavert's series of supervillainy included enthusiastic recommendations such as these:

"Smith is like the Pixar of comics. ...Kids will see peers, while the wisdom of age lets adults enjoy the book with a sense of nostalgia for the happy times and a pity for the less than happy moments." Robert T. Patey III, Ain't It Cool News

"GLADSTONE’s is a welcome spin to villain origin stories that anybody could enjoy." Dennis Baquedano, WatchPlayRead

"...very reminiscent of another hit Image title, INVINCIBLE, back when it first began. While INVINCIBLE was the birth of a great hero as well as a satire, GLADSTONE'S too offers up that slight satire element as the kids try and behave like adults do..." Matthew Meylikhov, Multiversity Comics

"I believe there are only two types of people in the world: those who enjoyed the series, and those who haven’t heard of it yet." -Nicholas Yanes, SciFiPulse

"The kids of course, are the heart of this comic, and for would-be Doctor Dooms and Lex Luthors they are really cute and entertaining. There are very few comics about kids that really come across as actual kids..." Larry King, Major Spoilers

"World conquering has never been such a blast." Colin Bell, Newsarama

"...GLADSTONE's looks like a Saturday morning cartoon put on paper in storyboard format." Joey Esposito, IGN

"This is the closest I've seen a comic get to reaching that highly sought-after level of capturing a Pixar-esque balanced audience." Nick Boisson, Comics Bulletin

"GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS is one of those 'wish I’d thought of it' concepts!... I just can’t praise it highly enough." Edward Kaye, HyperGeek

"It's so rare to find an all-ages book that doesn't talk down to children, which is why Gladstone's is such a fantastic treat. ... It's hard to read Gladstone's without it putting a huge smile on your face." Miguel Perez, IGN

"GLADSTONE's represents a brilliant concept for the modern superhero comic. ...packs action, a fantastic premise, light, manga-inspired art, and more heart and humor than you can shake a stick at. It's a well-sculpted all-ages dream book..." Erik Lewis, DailyBlam

GLADSTONE'S SCHOOL FOR WORLD CONQUERORS, VOL. 1 TP (SEP110407, ISBN: 978-1-60706-115-1), a 192-page full-color all ages supervillain adventure comic book collection for $15.99, will be on sale in stores November 16.

Defense With the BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight after being bitten and partially cured to walk as a half-zombie among them.)

Things have gone from bad to worse.

The wounds I sustained have not healed. I have no clue why they aren’t as my wounds in the past healed. Feel like I'm getting weaker. I managed to find some fresh food in the form of squirrels and rabbits, but don’t think it is cutting it. Not sure what I can do as I know there are lot of folks chasing after me.

If I were to get attacked here I don’t think I could even hold them off for long. Something has to give. Maybe I'm finally become that which I hated and despised for so long just--another mindless zombie. I just don’t know if I could handle that or handle a slow decline into that. There has to be some way to get back fully on my feet, or at least what I was before that run in with the bandits and radioactive zombies that messed me up before.

I think I'll try a radical new combination of drugs and chemicals I have to see if that will fix it and if it doesn’t it was a great run.

Have to go pass out now and get some rest so I can use the strength I have to set it up and give it a try. Hopefully I'll be here next week. Until then keep surviving........

IDW Announces True Blood Ongoing

IDW doesn't know what you've done to them, but they know one thing's true: they want to do real bad things to you. And this is "bad" in the good sense, as in something is so bad it's good for you. Like an all new True Blood ongoing comic.

“The comics are a great way to continue telling True Blood stories off screen,” said show creator, Alan Ball. “With this new ongoing series, Truebies will be able to find a new comic in stores every month. We’ll also have even more room to create in-depth drama and further explore the world of Bon Temps.”

Added IDW chief operations officer, Greg Goldstein, “IDW could not be happier than to move to this next step with our HBO partners. Since we originally launched TRUE BLOOD comics in 2010, fans have been asking for an ongoing series, and we’re happy to be able to work with HBO and offer it.”

In the second series called True Blood: Tainted Love, co-written by Michael McMillian and Marc Andreyko, Jessica is exposed to contaminated bottles of Tru Blood, causing the lovely vampire to go berserk. It’s up to Sookie, Bill, Eric and the rest of the Bon Temps gang to figure out who (or what) is behind the bad Blood. Plus, Reverend Newlin is back and as always in the world of True Blood, things are not as they seem.

Not only that, but True Blood: The French Quarter is currently in stores and will be collected come March 2012. That series finds Sookie and Eric in New Orleans tracking a killer, whom Eric and Godric thought they killed in Paris more than 200 years ago, while Bill is in town investigating a local Hep-D outbreak that may be connected to the killer’s latest victims. Meanwhile, back in Bon Temps, Pam is hanging out at Merlotte's and she wants something with Lafayette.

Full press release after the jump.

IDW ANNOUNCES "TRUE BLOOD" ONGOING

Since the first issue launched in July of 2010, the TRUE BLOOD comic books have become one of IDW Publishing’s most popular titles. Fans of the hit HBO show were excited to have new, unique stories featuring their favorite characters. In an effort to give Truebies what they crave – more Sookie, Bill and Eric – continuously through the year, IDW and HBO will launch the first-ever ongoing TRUE BLOOD comic series in spring 2012, featuring new series installments each month.

Following on the success of the New York Times best-selling first comic collection, TRUE BLOOD: ALL TOGETHER NOW, IDW and HBO launched the second edition TRUE BLOOD: TAINTED LOVE. In this twisted tale, co-written by True Blood actor Michael McMillian and comic mainstay Marc Andreyko, Jessica is exposed to contaminated bottles of Tru Blood, causing the lovely vampire to go berserk. It’s up to Sookie, Bill, Eric and the rest of the Bon Temps gang to figure out who (or what) is behind the bad Blood. Plus, Reverend Newlin is back and as always in the world of True Blood, things are not as they seem. Both TRUE BLOOD: ALL TOGETHER NOW and TRUE BLOOD: TAINTED LOVE are currently available in comic and book stores, and through the Apple iTunes and iBooks stores.

IDW’s third TRUE BLOOD comic series, TRUE BLOOD: THE FRENCH QUARTER is a monthly comic series currently available in stores and will be available as a collection in March 2012. THE FRENCH QUARTER finds Sookie and Eric in New Orleans tracking a killer, whom Eric and Godric thought they killed in Paris more than 200 years ago, while Bill is in town investigating a local Hep-D outbreak that may be connected to the killer’s latest victims. Meanwhile, back in Bon Temps, Trubies will wonder why Pam is hanging out at Merlotte's and what it is she wants with Lafayette.

Mr. Murder is Dead

Being named Mr. Murder is somewhat macabre. It's only fitting that the name would be naturally inclined toward death. If only there were a retelling of said death, as in the appropriately named Mr. Murder is Dead.

Written by Victor Quinaz and illustrated by Brent Schoonover, Mr. Murder is Dead features Old Gould Kane, long into his retirement as a top cop. He also happens to be the number one suspect with a deep motive and the suspicion of even his partner. THe clues that could lead Gould to a new and maybe greater profession as a very bad man.

The title is set against the backdrop of Golden Age comic strips and is published in a partnership with Zachary Quinto.

Usagi Yojimbo Reaches 200th Issue

Rabbits in the backyard aren't quite good at defending themselves. Of course, none of them are very well trained in the way of the sword like a certain samurai rabbit. A certain samurai rabbit named Usagi Yojimbo. The feisty rabbit is so proficient that he's coming up on his 200th issue...in a manner of speaking.

Dark Horse's Usagi Yojimbo #1 will be the 200th issue of the series (stay with the numbering here). It's a fitting accomplishment for creator Stan Sakai, the 2011 Cultural Ambassador by the Japanese American National Museum.

The rabbit ronin celebrates with a special story perfect for new readers, “200 Buddhas”! With a ruthless gang terrorizing his small town, a humble stonecutter receives a vision and sets out to carve two hundred stone figures. Just as he has finished the 199th, a long-eared stranger comes to his door seeking shelter from the rain.

What's more is that Sakai's work is on display at the Japanese American National Museum, the largest museum in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. The JANM is located in Los Angeles, and the Year of the Rabbit exhibit closes its doors October 30, 2011. Check out the site at www.janm.org/exhibits/stansakai.

Usagi Yojimbo #141 is on sale now. Full press release after the jump.

USAGI YOJIMBO REACHES 200TH ISSUE!
STAN SAKAI HONORED WITH YEAR OF THE RABBIT EXHIBIT!

October 25, MILWAUKIE, OR—Earlier this year, Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai was named the 2011 Cultural Ambassador by the Japanese American National Museum. Shortly thereafter, the JANM opened their Year of the Rabbit exhibit—the most comprehensive collection of Sakai’s work to date.

Stan Sakai has won several Eisner Awards and has received over twenty Eisner Award nominations. Prior to Dark Horse’s long run on the series, there were thirty-eight Fantagraphics issues, sixteen Mirage issues, a summer special, and four color specials. Dark Horse’s Usagi Yojimbo #141 marks the landmark two hundredth overall issue of master storyteller Stan Sakai’s beloved series, and the rabbit ronin celebrates with a special story perfect for new readers, “200 Buddhas”! With a ruthless gang terrorizing his small town, a humble stonecutter receives a vision and sets out to carve two hundred stone figures. Just as he has finished the 199th, a long-eared stranger comes to his door seeking shelter from the rain!

“In a perfect world, everyone would read Usagi Yojimbo.”
—Greg McElhatton, Comic Book Resources

The Japanese American National Museum is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to sharing the experience of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

"Why did the chicken cross the road?" is one of those timeless questions. Image Comics seeks to answer it, but not quite in the way you'd expect.

The teaser image above promises an interesting story early next year. I think the chicken gets it.

John Lennon Coming to Comics

You can love or hate The Beatles all you want, but you can't deny the legacy of John Lennon. That legacy has fawned legions and legions of fans and devotion. To this point though there hasn't been a comic book focused on the man. Until now that is.

Bluewater Comics is having quite the success with their bio comics and this December John Lennon gets the treatment in Orbit: John Lennon. The title is focused on capturing his legacy, from his time with the Beatles and his solo projects.

“No one could begin to estimate the contribution the Beatles have had on our world,” said Darren G. Davis, president of Bluewater Comics. “And John Lennon is the perfect choice for our ‘Orbit’ series. He was so much more than just a rock star, because he used his stardom to make the world abetter place.”

The book features the writing talents of Marc Shapiro and his thoughts as well.

“I approached writing Fame: John Lennon as an exploration of a life full of potential and promise that was, sadly, cut short,” said Shapiro. “We all know the importance of John Lennon as part of The Beatles. But I felt it was more important to concentrate on his post Beatles' life and career, both good and bad, so that readers would get the clearest possible idea about who he was as a creative entity, husband and father.”

The book also features art by Luciano Kars and will sell for $3.99. To order it on Amazon click here http://www.amazon.com/Orbit-John-Lennon-Marc-Shapiro/dp/1450784488/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319247625&sr=1-1.

JOHN LENNON: THE COMIC BOOK COMING IN DECEMBER

In the pantheon of musical legends, John Lennon is at the top of the mountain, if not the king of the mountain. From his time with the Beatles and his solo projects, he asked the world to ignore borders and divisions, and instead he encouraged the average person to embrace what brings people together. And when his life ended viciously from an assassin’s bullet in 1980, the music industry, and the world, lost an advocate for peace, love and true musicality.

Now Bluewater shares Lennon’s story as part of Bluewater Comics “Orbit” series. Orbit: John Lennon will hit comic book stores in Dec. 2011 in time for the anniversary of his passing.

Comic book writer Marc Shapiro (Selena Gomez: The Graphic Novel, Female Force: Cher) said he painstakingly worked to capture the essence of Lennon’s story.

However, Shapiro takes the next step and explores “what might have been.”

The 32-page comic bookfeatures the art and cover by the Brazilian based artist Luciano Kars and will sell for $3.99.

For more information on Orbit: John Lennon and other comics from Bluewater Productions, go to our comic’s section or check them out in your local comic book shop, Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com.

The Walking Dead Renewed for Third Season

Zombies.

They're on everybody’s mind and are all over anything and everything. For example? The Walking Dead series on AMC that continues to smash rating records with only two episodes in for this season. With a record 7.3 million viewers for the season premier under its belt, AMC has already greenlit a third season to make sure there will be even more zombies and the fight for survival for next October. This series is just getting better and better.

Last year the first season was just six episodes that introduced our hero Rick Grimes and a ragtag crew of survivors banding together after the world basically ends in a zombie takeover. That first season had some powerful moments in it, such as Rick on the horse turning the corner and running into that pack of zombies or when they make their dramatic run out of the CDC before it blows. Examples like those are just what makes this show so freaking awesome to watch for fans of the comics and newbies. The show offers things for both alike that keep drawing them back for more.

As the second season kicks off that drama and action carried over into one hell of a season opener. What other show can start with a zombie herd shuffling past the survivors hiding out under cars with just the slightest sound dooming them all? It carried a high level of tension for the viewer, as zombies can do that. The human story in this series is a pretty powerful thing and reading the comic conveys that, but seeing it on the screen with characters acting it out just takes it to another level.

That first season was a good introduction to the characters and the sort of survival story they all find themselves in after the world goes to hell. This second season is the one where they are all going to be tested and we'll get to see if they can truly survive in a zombie world and keep it together.

So far both episodes have left the viewer with pretty big cliffhangers, but when set in a world with death around every corner a cliffhanger like these is going to mess with your head even more. I enjoy that they keep to the comic, but do change it a bit so for those who have read the comic so it won't be entirely predictable. The little changes make even the rabid fan guessing at times and not knowing what will happen is what keeps all those viewers coming back for more each week.

If you haven’t been watching the show, first off what the hell is wrong with you? Second, you better get on it--watch the first season and catch up on this one as you won’t regret it.

New Arrivals: October 26, 2011

Sometimes you make your way illustrating eviscerations and violence. And that will get you fairly far in the comic book world. It's good sometimes though to branch out and tackle topics that aren't quite as violent. Well, at least not as violent on the surface.

Jeremy Haun is an artist who made a splash (of blood) on Berserker, but now he's moving his talents to the writing side in Pilot Season: The Beauty #1.

Pilot Season: The Beauty #1 features a story by Haun and Jason Hurley and a cover by Haun. In it, modern society is obsessed with outward beauty and there's a way to become more beautiful every day. Of course, it's contagious and, in the world of The Beauty, physical perfection is attainable. Most have taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon learn that it comes with a terrible price.

Enjoy!

Ratfist of Fury

Earthworm Jim was a FANTASTIC game. It was outlandish at a time when things weren't quite as outlandish and it worked exceptionally well. Creator Doug TenNapel is back with a brand new action comic in Ratfist, due in stores in December.

Ratfist was originally conceived as a character that might be on Cartoon Network, but instead became a webcomic. Colorist Katherine Garner is throwing in her talents to help with a brand new online webcomic. Not only that, but the entirety of TenNapel's Ratfist will be collected, featuring a forward by Michael J. Nelson and pinups by Ryan Ottley, Skottie Young, Christopher Hastings and Ethan Nicolle.

"I'm so thrilled that this can join the line up of books I've brought to Image," said TenNapel. "I hope those that missed it when I was publishing online get to pick it up now in print!"

Ratfist TPB will hit stores on December 14 at 176-pages for only $19.99. It would make a fantastic gift around that time of year. Honestly, I'd be stoked to be getting an Earthworm Jim comic as well. I should be careful what I wish for though. I've heard rat fists are packed full of fury.
