The Fresh Prince of Captain America

Update: Ain't it Cool News has done some sleuthing and have sufficiently debunked the story of Smith playing Captain America. "Hey folks, Harry here to restore your faith in the world - Multiple sources from MARVEL have confirmed that Derek Luke, of Spike Lee's MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to Will Smith and CAPTAIN AMERICA. Marvel never offered the part, nor did they approach or entertain a conversation about Will Smith for CAPTAIN AMERICA. That said - I'm sure they have a few parts that they'd like him for, just not Captain America." Although you have to admit that for Derek Luke to just suddenly mention Will Smith as Captain America is kind of strange. Maybe there's more to this than Marvel's letting on, but for the time being it seems that this is nothing more than a rumor at this point. Captain America, being one of Marvel's flagship characters, is a highly valuable property. That being said there a lot of eyes on Marvel as to who they plan on casting as Captain America in the upcoming film. MTV Movies has a pretty radical notion as to who Marvel has approached about protraying the Stars and Stripes Avenger: Will Smith. That's right kids, THE Fresh Prince of Bel Air himself Smith. During an interview with Derek Luke of Miracle at St. Anna, Luke let slip that Smith has been approached for the role. “I heard they offered Will Smith ‘Captain America,’” said Luke, adding that the intriguing casting rumor “just shows you how times have changed.” Luke also mentioned about himself his interest in getting into a comic film. “I would love to jump into Green Lantern,” said Luke. “There are a lot of stories I’m into… [like] Black Panther.” Now back to Smith. This actually doesn't piss me off as much as you might think it would have. Smith is exactly the chiseled and charismatic person that would do a phenomenal job as Captain America, but it may piss off a lot of Marvel loyalists. However, the recent racial change of Nick Fury hasn't really pissed anyone off (granted Samuel L. Jackson is the one portraying the man), and Ben Affleck's Daredevil featured Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin, so Marvel clearly is not opposed to switching things up. This could end just being another one of those outlandish rumors, but still, would be kind of cool if it panned out I think. Will Smith as Captain America

  1. This is a brilliant idea-marvel has a way with seemingly casting against the grain while at the same time making casting decisions that seem perfect and inspired-BRAVO!
