Kirsten Dunst reprising Mary Jane role?

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is due out this week and features three actors with ties to comics: Simon Pegg for his work on Ant-Man (upcoming), Megan Fox for Transformers and most likely Fathom and Kirsten Dunst, probably most recognizable among comic fans as Mary Jane Watson. Which is all good and well, but with the recent announcement that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi were returning for the next two installments of Spider-man, Pegg and Fox had to know that all press for the upcoming film would feature a barrage of questions aimed at Dunst about her return to the webhead franchise. Her response? “I’m in,” said Dunst matter of factly, but later cryptically added, “I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors.” This is according to the MTV Movies Blog. So I would say that that's a pretty definite confirmation, and we should be hearing official word from Sony at some point in the immediate future. But wait! There's more. Pegg's in it too! “I’m in ‘Spider-Man!’” joked Pegg. “I play Mary Jane’s brother. He comes to New York from the university, and he says, ‘Hey, what are you doing hanging out with that web-crawler?’” Wait for it. Wait for it. Ok, Pegg was just kidding, which you would've realized had you seen any of his movies. Still pretty funny though. But back to Dunst. I'm kind of torn about her coming back. I'm extremely happy because she's not being replaced by some other actor, which lends to that continuity. But does her coming back mean that the next two movies will just be Peter Parker and Mary Jane having relationship problems while Spider-man fights ? I mean, Sam Raimi kind of killed a lot of storylines in Spider-Man 3, including Gwen Stacey and Venom. Granted, I could see Venom coming back in some way shape or form, but Gwen Stacey? She seemed kind of turned off by Peter's whole revenge spiel at the jazz club. Everyone's saying Lizard is inevitably next, but where's Mary Jane play in all this? I've said it before and I'll say it again: bring in Carnage. Make Spider-Man 4 all about Venom (like 3 should have been), and then make Spider-Man 5 all about Spider-Man and Venom versus Carnage. Just go all out. Studios want these comic book movies to be slightly darker nowadays, and frankly I can't think of anything darker than Carnage. Maybe even have Carnage actually kill Mary Jane (or Gwen Stacey) at the end of the fourth film to set up an epic fifth. Kirsten Dunst reprising Mary Jane role?
