Marvel vs. Capcom 2 demo thoughts

I was just as excited as the next guy to hear that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would be coming to both Xbox Live and PSN. I mean, the game is the perfect blend of characters, gameplay and over-the-top graphics. A whopping 64 characters from the Capcom and Marvel universes is still an almost unheard amount of characters in a fighting game. And being able to have dream teams across the universes (or even within a universe) was truly awesome. So the masses of fans that didn't get a chance to play the game in its heyday are now getting a second chance. The game is set to be released this summer, but in the meantime PS3 owners were treated to something special: a demo of the game. How is the demo you ask? In a word: abysmal. Before you think I'm blaspheming the game, hear me out. I love this game. I'm one of the most ecstatic people knowing that this game will be hitting the consoles and have online play enabled. But the demo is such a neutered version of awesomeness. Here's the biggest problem: YOU CAN ONLY PLAY TWO PLAYERS. No playing versus the computer, no playing quick matches online. You can't even play against a human opponent just standing there because you have no one to control them unless you have two controllers. Seriously, who at Capcom thought this would be a good idea? Why in the world you would unleash a demo that requires two controllers to play, especially when games these days focus on online play? I understand that it could be a limitation of the game's progress. Why wouldn't you wait until the game was farther along though to release it where you can at least play versus the computer? I really don't think the fans of the game are going to try to short shrift Capcom and get by without buying the game and only playing the demo. This game has a cult following and I'm sure it will do exceptionally well when it's actually released. Look, I know the game will be awesome. The graphic filters will put a fresh coat of paint on it, and the four-player quarter mode has me hooked. But Capcom shouldn't insult fans of the game (or gamers period) by putting such a hamstrung demo out that only allows you to play against another person. I can appreciate the interactive social spirit, but at least give us the option to play against the computer. Here's to hoping that a patch is released for the demo (as sad as that may sound) that will allow us to fully enjoy it before the game's full release.
