NOLA. The kids these days are about the badass nicknames, so naturally NOLA is a good fit. Bad news.
NOLA isn't about a plane.
The new series from Boom! Studios focuses on what every citizen of New Orleans wanted after Hurricane Katrina hit: revenge.
"NOLA takes the revenge/crime story to a complex setting, amongst a national disaster, where crime, and poverty reached a fever pitch," says Managing Editor Matt Gagnon. "Combine one of the most culturally rich environments on the planet with a tragedy of biblical proportions, and a passionate anti-hero with a righteous mission and you get NOLA."
Nola Thomas has recently awoken alone in a New Orleans hospital. Naturally she has no idea what the hell is going on, and a comic book is born. The story is created by Chris Gorak and features interior art by Damian Couceiro. The first issue ships with two covers in a 50/50 split (one cover by Erik Jones and the other by Chris Brunner). The first of the four issue miniseries will be on a comic book store rack near you in December.
I want to say that this comic is a little late, as the events of Katrina seemed like so long ago. I suppose there's a certain statute of limitations as far as time sensitivity goes when it comes to telling these stories. But the region is still in dire need of help and while the Superdome is patched, things are still hell for the residents. Props to Boom! though for crafting a comic that will hopefully serve as a reminder of what's still going on in New Orleans.
