Manga – The Other White Meat

Welcome back once again. So last week I attempted to wrap up about 16 combined years of anime into one summary column. I failed, and I know that, but hopefully those of you actually interested in reading this were already following Bleach and Naruto so all the gaping holes were prefilled with your brilliance and knowledge of the series. This week we’ll be focusing specifically on the manga released LAST week to get ready to watch the new releases that I’m sure will be available translated within mere hours. Read on for last week’s summary… BLEACH Last week saw the battle between the Vizards and Ex-Captain Aizen (now the ultimate figure in the series) continue. Kensei, one of the good guys, uses his power to fight one of the youngest, but strongest, members of Aizen's Arrancar army. He uses his Bankai, essentially the second release of his sword and a Shinigami’s most powerful form to date. For those of you unfamiliar, the Vizard are basically Shinigami that have acquired hollow powers in addition to their old Death God powers. They are feared and exiled from Soul Society, the home of the Shinigami. Arrancar are evil spirits or hollows that underwent the reverse process, obtaining Shinigami powers. Obviously they are evil and enemies of Soul Society. Meanwhile Aizen has joined the battle and goads the Vizard into attacking him. Only one loses her cool and Hiyori (the Vizard) charges in and is quickly cut in half, yes, clean in half, by Gin, Aizen’s lead lieutenant. As Shinji, the defacto leader of the Vizard goes to her aid, he screams out for Ichigo to return from where he is trapped in Hueco Mundo, the home of the Arrancar and other hollows. For the first and only time as the manga closes we flash to our hero returning from his last battle. NARUTO In Naruto the battle between Sasuke (the former hero turned enemy) and the five Kages rages on at their meeting. Meanwhile in Konoha, Kiba, Lee, Sakura, and Sai leave to pursue Naruto. Naruto is struggling with coming to terms with the fact that Sasuke the friend may truly be dead and only Sasuke the enemy and member of Akatsuki remains. Naruto fought hard to avoid being consumed by hatred and revenge, and where he succeeded it seems that Sasuke has failed. Back at the meeting of the Kages, Sasuke is finally defeated and Uchiha Madara steps in before he can be killed. The Hokage, Sasuke’s original target, has escaped and Madara wants to talk. He places Sasuke and Karin in another dimension that is one of his jutsus so that Sasuke can heal. After telling his plan to the Kages for peace, they reject it as self serving and not true peace. After the conversation Madara claims he has no choice, and declares The Fourth Ninja World War. A lot of talking and setup story took place in this issue, but this is quite the culmination. Madara has lived for just over 100 years and is still one of the most powerful ninjas in the world. He is a scary man, and a war with him is a war that will cost lives. I’m excited. Next week in addition to Manga reviews I will reach deep into my brain to review another manga or anime that I particularly enjoyed or found to have an intriguing story. Keep reading until then...
