Manga - The Other White Meat

Hello and welcome everyone! We’re back with another manga review to prepare for the releases that are probably incoming as we speak. Without further ado let’s jump right in. When we last left Bleach Yammy the Espada was still fighting Ichigo, who is having trouble with his hollow powers and appears to be toast. What better time for an intervention by the fully healed, new, high-power level, Super-Saiyan Shinigami Captains to show up! Yeah…that’s pretty much how I feel about Bleach at this point. At least one of these captains is totally insane and always makes for good entertainment. In Naruto meanwhile we are left dealing with the aftermath of Sasuke’s attack on the Kages and Uchiha Madara’s declaration of the Fourth Great Ninja War. Naruto’s friends have also found him so I’m sure something interesting will happen there. Continue on for this weeks reviews! BLEACH This episode opens up with Captain Zaraki Kenpachi and Byakuya Kuchiki helping out Ichigo. Zaraki pulls his usual “get out of the way before I kill you” routine with Ichigo (they have a complicated relationship) and Byakuya does his normal elitist routine and tells Ichigo to fall back and let the Captains (the real power) take care of things. Once Ichigo has sufficiently backed off Yammy lands what appears to be a pretty brutal punch on Zaraki. It looks like Byakuya and Zaraki cut off a leg, and Zaraki responds to the punch by blasting off one of Yammy’s arms. They trade insults but it is pretty clear that Yammy is out of his league. In the meantime Byakuya tells Ichigo that he is essentially scum, and that he needs to remember his place and protect the real world. At this moment Captain Kurotsuchi Mayuri shows up (leader of the research and technology bureau of Soul Society). Mayuri and Ichigo have some pleasant conversation and Mayuri reveals that he can now open a gate to the real world for Ichigo. In the only real twist of the episode Captain Unohana shows up and agrees to go with Ichigo. Unohana is still largely a mystery in the Bleach world. She is one of the oldest captains, and while she has a gentle and quiet demeanor, everyone seems terrified of her. I’m wondering if she might be the key to fighting off a seemingly invincible Aizen in the real world showdown. In any case, we end with Ichigo and Unohana returning to the real world. Another chapter where nothing really happened…. NARUTO Onwards to the better series! The Hokage of Konoha has left the meeting of the Kage’s and everyone believes that he cannot be trusted and cannot be the leader of the ninja alliance. Madara has left as well. Of course, who really cares about that. Killer Bee (one of the Jinchuriiki) has begun his fight with the Akatsuki member Kisame, and this will be a VERY interesting battle. First Killer Bee uses a giant bear to attack and we cut away to the chase after the Hokage. One of the Kage’s personal guards is tracking him using a special ninja technique and comes across a jutsu used by one of the akatsuki. The Hokage has powerful bodyguards however, and eventually the tracker runs into a clever trap that catches him. Danzou, the Hokage, orders one of his companions to take his right eye, the one containing the powerful Sharingan with him should he fall. Apparently Danzou can use that eye to transfer to a new body much like the former arch villain (no dormant) Orochimaru could. Back with the Kages, they decide to negate the former decision that the Raikage can’t be leader. Eventually everyone agrees, especially considering that he is the only one who can control his brother, Killer Bee. That may be a moot point considering that his brother is fighting Kisame, unbeknownst to the gathering. Meanwhile, Sakura has decided to do what she usually does, which is be completely useless. She tells Naruto that she is over Sasuke and that she loves him. While this has always been a dream of Naruto’s, he still believes in his friend Sasuke and doesn’t think Sakura is being honest with herself. Finally, Naruto shuts her down with maybe the best line he has EVER used. “I hate people who lie to themselves!” Naruto’s great ninja power, as far as I can tell, is his ability to turn people to his point of view and develop bonds with people. So far as I can tell, Sasuke is the first person to EVER escape that. He has NEVER said anything like that statement to someone in all the years this series has been on. There is so much going on that I can’t wait to see how it all ties together. Farewell until next week…
