Defense with the BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is set in a world where zombies have taken over and people live in small spots all over the world. It’s a weekly broadcast of news from around the globe and a tip to help survival.)

Monday again just swings around too quickly and it just means more work ahead. I just came back from an excursion to Kansas and saw the largest herd of zombies in my life. I mean it was like thousands -if not tens of thousands- heading southwest towards what...I have no idea. Seems we caught a lucky break in that they didn’t spot any of us; otherwise it was going to be game over for a lot of survivor spots up north our way including us. Well on to the real news part.

Forces from Cuba have liberated the nearby Cayman Islands and also aided Jamaica in retaking their island from all zombies as well. More of the islands in the Caribbean are becoming zombie free, opening up their islands to survivors in the process. For the survivors in the few safe islands in Key West they are receiving more aid from Cuba as a rough hurricane destroyed most of what they had stocked up. Looks like that's all there is for the news. Now time for the tip.

Today I'm going to go over water filtration and methods of collecting water that can make the difference between surviving and dying.

Now the first part of filtration is to use a container with alternating layers of charcoal and sand with holes poked in the bottom for the water to get out of. Doing it this way will allow you to clean up some of the filthiest water you can come across while moving around. The second part is to take this water and boil it to kill any remaining bacteria that may be in it for it to be truly safe to drink. This is the dangerous part as you can only make a fire if you are absolutely sure it can’t be seen.

Other methods of collecting water are pretty easy to do and can lead to instantly drinkable water. If you have a safe place that you are living and set up at make sure to have plenty of buckets and empty containers around to collect rain water in. In most areas rain water is some good clean water that you can drink and also a great indicator to try and plant a garden as well. If you're in a hot enough area like a desert or a place that gets plenty of sunlight you can do a solar still.

Basically dig a hole in the ground and put a can or cup in the hole and then pee around the hole into the sand or dirt followed by covering it with a clear plastic sheet. As the piss evaporates the plastic will catch the water and it will flow down into the cup (make sure to point the middle of the plastic wrap towards the cup). This is a method to use if no other water source can be found, but will at least give you a bit of water to keep you going. Beyond of course checking out any convenient store you pass that could hold water as well, but sure not to venture too far into any city or dense area. Unless there is no other place to get water of supplies stay clear of them at all costs as too many zombies will be around.

That’s all I have for today for my tip and the news. Remember to keep fighting and keep surviving.
