I never really got the appeal of Sub-Mariner or Namor. Sure, they're pretty ripped and strong, but what superhero isn't? And really, how useful is it to control the sea when most heroes can fly or avoid the water? These types of characters were clearly created for a reason and that reason is...I don't know actually. What I do know is that a character like Sub-Mariner has persisted and endured and is getting the retrospective treatment this week in Fire and Water: Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner, and the Birth of Marvel Comics HC.

Fire and Water: Bill Everett, the Sub-Mariner, and the Birth of Marvel Comics HC is by Blake Bell and Bill Everett and is the follow-up to Bell's Strange & Stranger: The World of Steve Ditko and is touted as the definitive biography of Everett and his career. Since the book features Sub-Mariner in the title though, the focus of the coffee table art book is on the main character created in 1939.

The 216-page hardcover is a little pricey at $39.99, but you know you're getting your money's worth. Go ahead. Reward your coffee table for its hard work.

Enjoy!
