Bill Plympton's Idiots and Angels Coming to DVD

Bill Plympton is nothing if not a little off-kilter and his latest animated feature Idiots and Angels exemplifies that perfectly. The DVD will ship mid-summer, but if you get a preorder in before July 4 you're in for a special bonus: a free 35mm clipping from the film.

The film is an animated dark comedy about a man's battle for his soul.
Angel, a morally bankrupt man mysteriously wakes up with a pair of
wings on his back, which force him to do good deeds, contrary to his
nature. He desperately tries to rid himself of the wings, but also finds
himself fighting those who view his wings as their ticket to fame and
fortune.

This movie was was an official selection at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival,
won a Special Distinction Award at the Annecy Animation Festival,
the Grand Prix at the AniFest Trebon and was named Best Film at
the Fantasporto Festival in Portugal. That is to say, it comes bearing accolades.

Stephen Holden of the New York Times called the film "relentless and
brilliant", and New York Magazine called it an "ambitious, hilariously
demented moral fantasy". Variety called it "Bill Plympton's slyly
sardonic black comedy, his best animated feature to date".

You can preorder the film here. The film will also be on sale at San Diego Comic-Con, where Bill Plympton will host a panel about the DVD release, and will be available in Booth 1537 to autograph copies of his DVDs and other merchandise.

Full press release after the jump.
