Defense With The BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight to survive and to keep on living.)

Fear.

I remember you well. Fear of seeing that zombie ambling towards your hiding spot or hoping you can sneak past them without being seen. Fear is what keeps you alive and able to fight another day. The day you no longer have the fear is when you get reckless and do something stupid being heroic.

I've been walking along a highway; a few cars here and there dotting the landscape. None were burned out or damaged. Just out of gas and left behind with some items inside, too heavy or useless among the seats. It was while searching through these cars I heard the motor off in the distance and headed my way. When it comes to engine noise the best bet is to get under cover until they pass and then get the hell out of the area.

With noise comes people and with people come zombies in their wake. I managed to get off the highway and up into a tree line on a ridge, dropping down into some brush. Figured I was hidden enough I waited for whatever was making the engine noise to come this way. Maybe could be someone who could help.

After a few minutes this little buggy rolled up on the road stopping next to one of the vehicles. No doubt looking to find gas or supplies; doing the exact same drill I did over all those cars. They are able to grab some of the bigger stuff having a running vehicle and all, but they lingered a bit too long. Using my binoculars I saw a group of about five zombies shambling down the road bearing closer to the mystery survivor searching.

Saw him hanging halfway out of the front seat of this car when the zombie pack was almost on them. They must have heard the moan caused he jumped out of the front door and fell backwards to the pavement. The guy didn’t stand a chance as he scrambled across the pavement backpedalling while he fumbled to get his weapon out. The zombies just dropped right on top of him and begun devouring the poor bastard; I could hear his screams all the way where I was.

Every instinct in me told me to get up and run while all the zombies were busy eating away. I know what that guy had would help me go a long way in my travels; especially a working vehicle. The bounty of goods down there is too good to pass up and I have to stay around and wait to see if I can get down there. My only hope is the guy didn’t have the keys on him when he went down and some zombie eats them. I just have to wait and see to find the best chance to make a move.

It's going to be a long afternoon.
