Defense With The BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight to survive and to keep on living.)

Year 5. Week 50.

I keep getting amazed at what we get accomplished around here. Another survivor group out in New Mexico heard our broadcasts and brought all of their people up here to Salt Lake City. Their outpost was about out of supplies and they had constant zombie attacks forcing them to relocate. Every time I think we are alone in this country, more groups seem to come out of nowhere, showing there are still people out there fighting and surviving. With this new group coming into ours we've been able to explore and find more supplies from within the city.

A row of greenhouses was located on one side of the city that had vegetables and fruits overflowing within. A bonus was rabbits and other small animals living inside that have come in handy for meals over the past week. Some of the plants and supplies we've transported to our base here. The rest we left there with better fortifications and barriers to keep unwanted vermin and zombies alike out of them. A wall was also built around them just as an added measure too, in case this area gets attacked. That wasn’t the only thing we found in there though.

On another side of the city there was a large tire yard. When looking through the area it didn’t seem to add up to much help, but tires do have their uses beyond on a car. We collected a ton of them and have begun tearing them apart into strips. Using these strips we're making wearable and flexible body armor to protect against zombie bites. Making old school chainmail style armor with rubber allows us to move a lot easier and faster, yet protects our bodies in the process.

With these tires being as old as they are it takes some time to shave down the rough spots and make sure they're safe for us as tires can be dangerous with their exposed threads. The plan is to make arm and leg bracers, as well as shoulder and neck guards, as those are the most exposed areas for zombies to try and bite through. We also have some people working on how to make shields out of the tires with spikes pushed through them, giving us a little offense from all these tires. We're also lacing the tires together with spikes to make clubs and balls of tires with nails to use as catapult ammo.

After this week the plan is to take a group back out in search of zombies. First goal is to kill any and all we come across, but a second goal comes to life if we find one of those radioactive ones--we're gonna try and capture it. We have no clue of their capabilities or intelligence, which makes capturing one (or at least observing one) a top of the order task. Plenty of stuff to do and I know we have the people to get it done. Busy is all I can say it's gonna be.
