Red Sonja #50 Coming in June

With the Red Sonja movie possibly in a holding pattern, fans of the savage redhead may want to turn to the comics to scratch that itch. June is a perfect month for getting back into her tale of vengeance and countryside carnage. Oh, and it features a Frost Giant. If writer Kevin McCarthy is to be believed, this is an issue you don't want to miss.

"This story was a thrill for me to write, and in case I never got another chance, I put everything I've ever wanted to see the She-Devil do into my little Sonja saga. So it's got a brutal bar fight, an old woman whose warnings of danger go unheeded, a malicious magic curse, blood on the snow, tragic Viking heroes, and a freakin' FROST GIANT. An earlier draft featured cameos by the Green Hornet, Vampirella, Robocop, and President Barack Obama, but Nick Barrucci nixed that because Red Sonja #50 had already exceeded critical levels of awesomeness!"

The 100-page standalone epic is written by Arvid Nelson, Raven Gregory and McCarthy and features art by Johnny D, Pablo Marcos and Joyce Chin. The story picks up the Queen Sonja series and will even be rige with classic stories by Roy Thomas. There will be four covers to choose from and a foreword by Dynamite's original Red Sonja writer Mike Carey. Feel free to salivate over the beautiful Joe Jusko cover above.

Full press release and interiors after the jump.

RED SONJA MONTHLY RETURNS WITH ISSUE #50!

Milestone issue hits comic stores in June!

Because SONJA fans demanded it.... this June, Dynamite Entertainment's original She-Devil with a Sword returns in the milestone anniversary issue, Red Sonja #50!

After the Red Sonja's epic battle with Kulan Gath and death, Dynamite made the move to the Queen Sonja series, leaving fans without the much anticipated #50 anniversary issue! But wait no more! In this amazing time and tradition inspired by other marvelous milestones (such as Marvel's Thor #600 and Amazing Spider-Man #600), the all-new Red Sonja #50 will feature 100 pages of story and art, including new stories from Arvid Nelson, Kevin McCarthy, Raven Gregory, as well as reprints of classic stories by Roy Thomas! This incredible comic book will be available with four awe-inspiring covers and a forward by Dynamite's original Red Sonja scribe, Mike Carey! Be sure to reserve your copy of Red Sonja #50 before it's too late!

The action and adventure of Red Sonja #50 will be told old school "Hyboria-style", and for more info, we thought we would let the author's talk about their stories:

"In her new incarnation, She's put through her paces by the likes of Michael Avon Oeming and Brian Reed, not to mention Rascally Roy Thomas himself. I was part of the equation too, for a little while, and it was a blast, even though I was basically playing Stanley to Mike Oeming's Livingstone. Vividly imagined by Mel Rubi and Walter Geovani and Pablo Marcos (and don't get me started on the cover artists), Sonja is as compelling a heroine as ever - and she's never looked better." -- Mike Carey, writer of X-Men Legacy and writer of Dynamite's (2005) Red Sonja series debut, Red Sonja #50 foreword

"In my story, Sonja finds herself leading a wealthy warlord on a hunt for a legendary mountain beast, the cloud tiger," says writer Arvid Nelson. "But she's got a secret the whole time. The story is part history, and part mystery!"

"RED SONJA: THE FROST GIANT'S CURSE is a full-length, stand-alone epic which finds the She-Devil trapped in a violent Viking port city cursed by a perpetual Winter," states writer Kevin McCarthy. "Unable to escape by sea or land, Red Sonja uses her wits and her sword to slash a bloody path through legends and lies to discover the tragic truth behind a tormented town, and a giant monster's curse that, much like our red-haired heroine, cuts both ways. This story was a thrill for me to write, and in case I never got another chance, I put everything I've ever wanted to see the She-Devil do into my little Sonja saga. So it's got a brutal bar fight, an old woman whose warnings of danger go unheeded, a malicious magic curse, blood on the snow, tragic Viking heroes, and a freakin' FROST GIANT. An earlier draft featured cameos by the Green Hornet, Vampirella, Robocop, and President Barack Obama, but Nick Barrucci nixed that because Red Sonja #50 had already exceeded critical levels of awesomeness! Maybe next time . . ."
"I had a fantastic time working on this story with Raven Gregory," adds artist Joyce Chin. "It was a blast to meld together the Red Riding Hood myth, werewolf legends, and Red Sonja, such an iconic hero, into such a fast paced action packed story!"
