G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is the next installment of my childhood to get the feature film treatment with the film's release August 7. Because the 80s were such a long time ago and you might not remember who was in your staged Joe/Cobra fights in your backyard, Omnicomic is profiling each character in the upcoming film. So sit back, read on and get reacquainted with some old friends.
Real Name: Baroness Anastasia Cisarovna

Background: The subject of so many adolescent fantasies among G.I. Joe fans, the ‘Baroness’ is probably on of the best known and recognizable figures in the G.I. Joe canon. Born into a ridiculously rich- and, by her estimation, boring- family somewhere in Europe, Cisarovna fueled her stereotypical rebellion against her parents into political activism, heading up student activist groups with extremely anarchistic views.
Sooner or later, she made the transition into militant international mercenary and terrorist. Granted the ‘Baroness’ is in a dirty line of work- but her skills and expertise have afforded her pay cuts that have helped her maintain the wealthy lifestyle she was born into. After Anastasia joined Cobra, she was severely burned during an intelligence mission. Following, she had extensive plastic surgery- completely severing any former ties she had with her old life. While a well-known operative for many criminal and terrorist organizations, very few know anything about this woman.
Anastasia sometimes fills in as a liaison between Cobra and other organizations- her good looks and charm help ‘grease the wheels’ a little bit. Most notably, she has an on-again, off-again romance with Destro. While Cisarovna’s advances are in part aimed at helping Cobra retain profitable dealings with Destro’s organization, the man is probably one of the only few in the world that the Baroness has ever felt any true intimacy with. As such, her loyalty is sometimes torn between these two poles- Cobra and Destro himself.
