Defense with the BoomStick

(Disclaimer: This post is an ongoing story set in a world where zombies have taken over and people are fighting to survive anyway they can. Originally it was a post of news and tips to help survivors make it one more day alive, but now it has became a story of my fight after being bitten and partially cured to walk as a half-zombie among them.)

I was taking a break the other day, hiding out to rest for a bit and it occurred to me that I haven’t really heard any radio transmissions these last two months. Like none at all from other outposts, survivors on the move or even the government safe zone up in the Northeast. Granted I have been pretty damn busy fighting those bastardly bandits and keeping away from those radioactive zombies that want a piece of me too, but I haven’t really thought about the lack of other transmissions.

Review - Pariah #1-3

It's not easy being different. Outcasts. Your contrasting features make you out to be an easy scapegoat when things really go wrong. It's not always the case that you're an outcast by choice though, a topic addressed in the title Pariah from Sea Lion Books.

The title is written by Aron Warner and Philip Gelatt, with art and lettering by Brett Weldele and plays out in a dystopian future where a group of super-intelligent individuals known as Vitros are feared as terrorists. Of course, their encounters with the general public don't go so well for them. Warner knows a thing or two about outcasts, as he was the producer for Shrek.

New Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Trailer

Travel info on the Kingdom of Amalur is hard to come by. Mostly because the world is still being fleshed out ahead of the game's February 7 launch. Wouldn't it helpful to know who you'll run into when you do make the trek to the massive kingdom?

In a newly released trailer for the game, viewers are introduced to the various factions that populate the world. There are Travelers, Scholia Arcana, Warsworn, Fae Houses and Tuatha Deohn. These groups represent thieves, sorcerers and the like, giving you the option to commit your loyalty where you choose.

When you've done exploring Skyrim, make sure to make your way over to Amalur. I hear the weather's lovely there in February and there's whispers of a wise scholar named PJ who sits around and reads all day. You can learn a thing or two from a PJ.

IDW Launching Photo Cover Month

If you haven't seen the Spike Jonze video for the Beastie Boys "Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win" then you're missing out. It pits the Beastie Boys--in G.I. Joe format--against the likes of terrorists, zombies and even a yeti. It's cool though, as the yeti's actually on their side. The great thing about the video is the "realism" of the action figures, something IDW is looking to capitalize on with a series of phot covers.

IDW has just announced a "Photo Cover Month" that will celebrate with out-of-the-box photo covers for most of the publisher's popular series. Readers should look for the “Photo Cover Month” badge next to participating IDW comics in the October issue of Diamond Previews, in stores on Wednesday.

“I mean, who didn’t grow up building JOE or TRANSFORMERS dioramas,” asked IDW’s Hasbro editor, John Barber. “This December, IDW is helping our readers relive those glory days, plus much more!”

IDW’S “Photo Cover Month” spans the comic spectrum, from vintage action figure dioramas to awesome cast photos, from COBRA to TRUE BLOOD, and from DOCTOR WHO to TRANSFORMERS. Each participating comic will feature one regular photo cover, plus a drawn cover. The photo covers vary from souped-up cast images to classic toy action shots. The complete list of participating comics is below. While many covers are included in the Diamond Previews catalog, IDW will be releasing more images throughout October.

The list of titles so far include Cobra #8, Doctor Who #12, Eternal Descent Vol. II #2, G.I. Joe #8, G.I. Joe: Real American Hero #173, Transformers #31, Transformers: The Death of Optimus Prime, True Blood: The French Quarter #5, Snake Eyes #8 and Star Trek #4.

Full press release and other covers after the jump. And thanks yeti, we're good.

Dark Horse Unveils Exclusive Spider-man Statue at NYCC

No, you didn't misread that title. At NYCC, Dark Horse will be unveiling an exclusive Spider-man statue for the big show in NY. The statue sold out quickly in San Diego and will be offered in limited quantities at the show.

“We wanted to evoke New York with our very special exclusive Spider-Man,” said Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “Unfortunately, space constraints made a rooftop water tower or fire escape impossible, but we still hope fans can sense the city in this piece.”

It is packaged in the same litho-printed tin box that is the hallmark of the Dark Horse Syrocos and will be sold at the normal retail price of $49.99, with a limit of four per customer.

These special New York Comic Con exclusives will be available at 4 PM on Thursday, October 13. Full press release after the jump.

DARK HORSE UNVEILS THE 2011 NEW YORK COMIC CON EXCLUSIVE MARVEL SPIDER-MAN SYROCO!

SEPTEMBER 28, MILWAUKIE, OR—As part of the Marvel Syrocos program that debuted at San Diego Comic-Con International in July, it is announced today that Dark Horse will be releasing another exclusive Spider-Man statue for New York Comic Con!

New York Comic Con attendees will have a very significant opportunity to acquire a special statue released just for the show. Much like the previously released and long-sold-out SDCC exclusive, a very limited number of this statuette is being offered. It is packaged in the same litho-printed tin box that is the hallmark of the Dark Horse Syrocos, and is destined to be a bona fide hot item, both at the show and far beyond the exhibit hall. It will be sold at the normal retail price of $49.99, with a limit of four per customer.

“We wanted to evoke New York with our very special exclusive Spider-Man,” said Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “Unfortunately, space constraints made a rooftop water tower or fire escape impossible, but we still hope fans can sense the city in this piece.”

The Marvel Syrocos program kicked off earlier this month with two alternating series: Classic Marvel Characters and the Fantastic Four. This new line will be deliberately different than the common modern Marvel collectible sculpture, with features like a rougher surface texture, visible seam lines, and other slightly distressed aspects, such as the method of paint application.

These special New York Comic Con exclusives will be available at four p.m. on Thursday, October 13. Don’t miss your chance to own one of these fantastic statues!

Victor Crowley Meets Cassie Hack

SWF. Propensity for hacking and slashing. Seeks murderous ghost. Enjoys long walks on the beach.

If Cassie Hack had a personal ad that would probably be it, in her efforts to seek out Victor Crowley in the upcoming Hack/Slash Annual 2011. She doesn't have to resort to ads though, content instead to rely on Image Comics to provide the rendezvous for her.

Hitting stores November 2 will be Hack/Slash Annual 2011, written by Benito Cereno and illustrated by Ariel Zucker-Brull.

"As a guy who spends a lot of time researching horror movies, believe me when I say the world needed Hatchet," said Seeley. "So, from the moment I saw the movie, I was looking for a way to have Cas and Vlad meet Victor."

In the Louisiana Bayou, the murderous ghost of Victor Crowley is maiming tourists in creatively horrible ways. But in his blind murderous rampage, he may have created something worse than himself. Now, Cassie and Vlad are back in New Orleans, and it won't be long before baseball bat meets hatchet and deformed mutant meets deformed mutant!

The 48-page, full color comic will set you back $4.99. Full press release after the jump.

Review - Executive Assistant Violet #3

The life of an Executive Assistant is tough. There are the typical duties, like answering phones, filing, scheduling meetings. Then throw in the assassinations, bodyguarding and dealing with betrayal and you've got a job description that few are wont to undertake. The three EAs (besides Iris) in Aspen's Hit List Agenda have all dealt with betrayal by their masters for some grander purpose, but it's safe to say that Violet's betrayal is probably the most devious.

Officer Downe Gets a Hardcover

It's never good to hear the words "office down" over the radio. Unless it's a clever play on words that is.

Officer Downe: Bigger, Better, Bastard Edition HC is a collected edition that proves to be probably the only time you like an officer down. Written by Joe Casey and illustrated by Chris Burnham, the title boasts added bonus pages.

"What could be a better X-Mas gift this year than an oversized hardcover filled with sex and gore and weirdness and gore?" said Casey. "...Did I mention gore? Well, OFFICER DOWNE delivers! I hear it's Santa's favorite comicbook about a cop who won't let death or dismemberment stop him!"

"The first edition of Officer Downe sold out really quickly and I'm always being approached by fans of my Batman Incorporated stuff who are trying in vain to get their hands on it," added Burnham. "I'm super psyched that they're finally going to see our contemptible depravity in such a big classy format."

The 96-page graphic novel will set you back $12.99 on December 7 when it hits stores.

Full press release after the jump.

Writer Joe Casey (HAUNT, DOC BIZARRE M.D.) and artist Chris Burnham (Batman, Inc.) have added bonus pages and even more pages of over-the-top sex and violence to this new edition, inviting readers to experience OFFICER DOWNE as it was meant to be experienced!

You’ve never felt “command presence” quite like this! This is the cop that’ll keep coming back for more… even from beyond the grave! As one review from Comic Book Resources explained, "Joe Casey adds the right mix of absurd situations and dialogue, while Chris Burnham’s art steals the show," and Major Spoilers put it well when they said, "This comic doesn’t just slap you in the face with it’s graphic nature; it helps you up again and slaps you back down twice as hard."

OFFICER DOWNE: BIGGER, BETTER, BASTARD EDITION HC (OCT110461, ISBN: 978-1-60706-477-0), a 96-page full-color action graphic novel for $12.99, will be on sale in stores December 7, and will be available for order in the upcoming October issue of Previews.

New Arrivals: September 28, 2011

It's not often that jesting and science goes together. It's not quite the peanut butter and jelly marriage that some would hope it would be. It's also the deal when it comes to Abe Sapien, most notably in his latest comic called Abe Sapien: Devil Does Not Jest #1 from Dark Horse.

Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi and illustrated by James Harren (covers by Dave Stewart and Dave Johnson), the title finds a deep, dark family secret buried in a demonologist's basement. It's in that basement that those occult practices prove to be life threatening for Abe Sapien.

Enjoy!

Review - Avengelyne #3

Are you ready for some more Heaven and Hell fighting getting down and dirty? There's one comic that has all that and hot chicks thrown in too boot: Avengelyne #3.

For a sort of reboot for the character it's been a great introduction so far. I wasn’t too familiar with her but have to say now I cannot wait for the next appearance of Avengelyne to arrive. It's done a great job of introducing most of the main players in Avengelyne, Red Dragon, Father Peter, Torment and Passover, showing off about of their past run-ins and what sort of powers they have to throw down with.

Writer and creator Rob Liefeld, Mark Poulton and artist Owen Gieni do some great work for Avengelyne over at Image Comics and hopefully the next adventure in this series will not be too far off.

Makeshift Miracle Graphic Novel Launches Online for Free

UDON Comics is set to launch an online serialization of Makeshift Miracle, a new graphic novel written by Jim Zub and illustrated by Shun Hong Chan. The title was one of the first long form graphic novels ever published online, from September 2001 to March 2003.

“There’s no shortage of comic readers,” says Erik Ko, UDON’s Chief of Operations, “The hard part has been getting great material into their hands so they can enjoy it and show all their friends. Putting our new original story online first breaks through the traditional barriers to entry. The content is there to win people over.”

X-Men Destiny Launches Today

Pepsi vs. Coke. Democrat vs. Republican. X-Men vs. Brotherhood. These dichotomies have plagued mankind for years, forcing us to choose one side or the other. Ok, not really, but at the very least the last one is a true choice.

X-Men Destiny is the latest X-game that asks gamers to choose their destiny. You can either get with the X-Men and fight the good fight, or get with the Brotherhood and hang out with Magneto all day.

In the game, players will be put in the role of new mutants who join the X-Men or the Brotherhood of Mutants and have to make choices to decide the ultimate destiny of their characters. Throughout the game, players will be able to collect and equip X-Genes (offensive, defensive or utility), granting them the power of an established member of the X-Men universe.

The Grave Doug Freshley Hardcover Edition

With a title so rife with puns you'd think you were reading a thesaurus, The Grave Doug Freshley from Archaia has made it to collected hardcover stage. That's right kids, the title--written by Josh Hechinger and illustrated by mpMann--will be collected in 168 pages of full-color glory for $19.95 on September 28.

The wild west is certainly not safe from zombies, as former schoolmaster Douglas Freshley is hired by his friend Shane McNally to tutor their son Bat. Of course, that works for a hot minute until the Delancey gang raids the McNally ranch, killing all the adults. That's ok though. Doug decides to rise up against them in more than just the power to the people way. His corpse is tasked with protecting Bat and extracting some frontier justice, all the while escaping the Grim Reaper.

Old west stories are always entertaining and adding in zombies gives this one that extra oomph. Check out some interiors after the jump.

Everyone Loves Super Dinosaur!

People love dinosaurs. They're awesome, despite whatever recent evidence may show that they actually had more in common with birds than reptiles. Or that the T Rex goes back and forth between being a voracious predator and a cowardly scavenger (it has to be the former). Or their propensity for genetic modifications and increased desire to play video games. Wait. What?

That last bit hasn't quite been proven by science, but it has been proven true by Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard in Super Dinosaur. Super Dinosaur Vol. 1 TPB hits stores November 23 and collects the first five issues of the series as well as the Super Dinosaur Origin Special #1 for only $9.99.

"Since becoming a parent, I wanted to create a comic book that parents can read with their kids or that kids can pick up and read on their own," said Kirkman. "We also wanted to create a comic that's appropriate for younger kids but doesn't talk down to them, so it will interest older readers as well!"

The world of Super Dinosaur follows a ten-year-old and his nine-foot tall Tyrannosaurus Rex friend. The duo are fighting against the Evil Max Maximus and his desire to get to Inner-Earth. His quest? Find the powerful DynOre mineral that originates there.

Hank McCoy (Before the Fur)

I’ve been very intrigued by this whole Spider Island thing. Like I’ve said so many times before: I’m a complete sucker for revamps. And this is strange but Spider Island has just a little bit of revamp going on I think. How so?

Well, see, with so many Spider-man comics getting cranked out every year, there’s bound to be a few plotlines that are just…let’s say poorly received. The infamous Ben Reiley clone saga comes to mind. Ooouuucchhh. Did people hate that one.

Trekker Relaunches Today

Trekker hasn't been around for a while. A long while. So long that it's gotten to the point where creator Ron Randall has had enough and wants to return the strip to glory. Launching today is the all new Trekker Comic website.

The character was originally created by Randall for Dark Horse during the rise of independent publishing. Bringing the character back will be the 8-page chapter that first introduced Trekker to the world. Every Monday will see a new installment from the series in chronological order of their original publication. Once the old stories have been read new ones will be created by Randall to keep the story alive.

Trekker first came on the scene in 1986, when Dark Horse approached Randall to create a new series for their catalogue. He was given complete creative freedom to determine the content and look of the series, as well as full ownership of the property.

“It was virtually an unheard-of opportunity at the time, and, of course, I could not resist,”says Randall. He went about putting together the visual and story elements that most appealed to him, and Trekker was born. Randall has since enjoyed a long and diverse career, but he notes that “Trekker has always inspired the very best of my efforts, and to this day it remains the most personal work I’ve produced.”

Trekker is the story of Mercy Ct. Clair, a brash, extraordinarily gifted young female bounty hunter living in the violent future of 2226. The strip follows Mercy’s life and personal “arc” as she pursues the hardened criminals that operate beyond the reach of an over-taxed law force. The existing stories open on the gritty, crumbling streets of New Gelaph, and gradually follow Mercy as she pursues the criminal element into the ruined lands beyond city lines. Ultimately Mercy’s journey will lead her out into the stars, where a restless humanity is striving for new hope. Randall hints that it’s on this grand stage that Mercy will discover her own surprising destiny.

The site plans to be the definitive repository of the character, featuring fully-restored, high-quality images of the entire series. The site will also include an exclusive "making of" image gallery featuring never before seen designs, sketches and drawings. Until recently, the existing Trekker stories have only been fitfully collected for print—short stories in Dark Horse Presents, the original Dark Horse series, and in various “Special” single issues, and for years fans have clamored for a complete, accessible collection of Mercy’s adventures.

Full press release after the jump.

Trekkercomic.Com Launches With The Return of Ron Randall’s Classic Sci-Fi Adventure Strip “TREKKER”

PORTLAND, Oregon--This Monday, September 26, 2011 marks the launch of www.trekkercomic.com, a new site which will feature weekly postings from the pages of Ron Randall’s classic, acclaimed sci-fi comic Trekker.

Randall, who is both writer and artist for the series, first created Trekker and its protagonist, Mercy St.Clair, for Dark Horse Comics during the rise of the independent publishing. Now he will also assume web publishing duties, beginning with the 8-page chapter that first introduced Trekker to the comics world.
Each Monday will mark the posting of an installment from the Trekker archives, in chronological order of their original publication. Once all existing stories have posted, Randall will go on to post completely new, ongoingTrekker tales chronicling the life and times of Mercy St. Clair.

Randall has since enjoyed a long and diverse career, but he notes that “Trekker has always inspired the very best of my efforts, and to this day it remains the most personal work I’ve produced.”

Starting Monday, September 26, 2011 the new website www.trekkercomic.com will begin weekly postings of the character Ron Randall first created at Dark Horse Comics back in the days of the rise of the independent publishers. The website will open with a posting of the entire first 8-page chapter that introduced the character. Each week new updates will continue to post fresh installments of all existing Trekker stories in the order they first appeared. Once all existing stories have posted, Randall will continue to post brand-new, ongoing Trekker tales, as he continues to follow the life and times of Mercy St. Clair.

About Trekker. In1986, Dark Horse invited Randall to create a series for them, and was given a creative free hand to come up with whatever he would most like to write and draw, and to have full ownership of the property. It was virtually an unheard of opportunity and, of course, Randall could not resist. Randall went about putting together the elements that most appealed to him, and came up with Trekker. Sure enough, the work Randall did on Trekker has always inspired the very best of his efforts. To this day Trekker remains the most personal and affectionately remembered work that Randall has produced in his long career.

Until recently, the existing Trekker stories have only been fitfully collected for print—short stories in Dark Horse Presents, the original Dark Horse series, and in various “Special” single issues, and for years fans have clamored for a complete, accessible collection of Mercy’s adventures.

Trekkercomic.com aims to be exactly that definitive repository. Luckily for fans, Randall “clung faithfully onto every page of the original Trekker stories,” and so www.trekkercomic.com will feature fully-restored, high-quality images of the entire series. Stories that originally appeared in black and white will remain faithful to the original, but later color stories will be completely re-colored to take advantage of recent refinements in digital coloring technique.

The site will also contain an exclusive “making of” image gallery containing never-before-seen Trekker-related designs, sketches and drawings.
Randall reports that every convention has brought questions from fans eager for the return of Trekker. His standard reply was that he had the entire series planned, and was only waiting for the appropriate venue to come along. He notes that “with www.trekkercomic.com, it’s finally the right time.”

The continuing adventures of Mercy St. Clair will be open and fully accessible to readers at www.trekkercomic.com beginning on Monday, September 26.

Archaia Unveils Sneak Peek of Tale of Sand

This past weekend seemed pretty innocuous as far as events go. Saturday would've been significant as the 75th birthday of Jim Henson. Honoring that birthday is something Archaia is keen on, honoring him with a twenty-page preview of Tale of Sand, based on a unproduced screenplay written by Henson and Jerry Juhl, illustrated by artist Ramón Pérez.

“We are so pleased to be able to share with Henson fans a glimpse inside this groundbreaking project,” said Christy. “Ramón Peréz has created a stunning visual translation of Jim Henson’s only unproduced feature-length screenplay, and we are honored to debut this exclusive preview of the forthcoming graphic novel in partnership with The Jim Henson Company and Google's celebration of Jim's birthday.”

The story tells the tale of a man kicked out of a dusty town in the middle of the desert, with no memory of who he is or where he came from. Relentlessly pursued by an unknown assailant, and with only a rucksack of odds-and-ends to his name, he embarks on a desperate race across an increasingly bizarre landscape with only one thing in mind: survival.

Tale of Sand will hit stores this November for $29.95 and 152 pages. Full press release after the jump.

ARCHAIA UNVEILS A 20-PAGE SNEAK PEEK OF ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL ‘TALE OF SAND’

BASED ON AN UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY CO-WRITTEN BY JIM HENSON, THE PREVIEW IS TIMED TO COINCIDE WITH GOOGLE’S CELEBRATION OF HIS BIRTHDAY

Hollywood, CA (September 23, 2011) – In honor of what would have been the late Jim Henson’s 75th birthday, award-winning publisher Archaia Entertainment will debut the first 20 pages of the upcoming original graphic novel Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand, which is based on an unproduced screenplay written by Henson and longtime collaborator Jerry Juhl and visualized and illustrated by acclaimed artist Ramón Pérez, it was announced by Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy today. The pages will appear exclusively on Archaia.com starting on Sept. 24th.

Tale of Sand, a dark, existential feature-length screenplay that built off of ideas Jim Henson had been developing since he produced his Academy Award-nominated short film “Timepiece,” tells the story of a man who is kicked out of a dusty town in the middle of the desert, with no memory of who he is or where he came from. Relentlessly pursued by an unknown assailant, and with only a rucksack of odds-and-ends to his name, he embarks on a desperate race across an increasingly bizarre landscape with only one thing in mind: survival.

Archaia and The Jim Henson Company entered into a multi-year publishing partnership in 2009 for Archaia to publish comics and graphic novels based on classic franchises like Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, as well as new, co-branded original properties.

Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand (hardcover, 152pp, $29.95, ISBN: 978-1-936393-09-1) is scheduled to debut in comic book shops and wherever books are sold in November 2011.

Another long week this one has been as I've had to keep moving to lose my tail of bandits and radioactive zombies alike. After those bandit reinforcements showed up last week I hightailed it out of the area as fast as I could, not leaving much of a trail for them to follow. They did follow though and I managed to lose them only a few days ago to much relief, but somehow the radioactive zombies still managed to track me.

I had to hide out a few times to get them off my trail or leave things that sent them off in a different direction. Since losing both of these nuisances chasing me I've been lended the time to head towards my new objective of taking out another bandit hideout marked on the map I snagged a few weeks back.

This time around I have to make a better plan when I make my move on this new outpost so there isn’t the same outcome as last when I was ambushed by bandits. I thought I had a pretty damn good plan. I would make my way to the outpost furthest from where I was, thinking it would be underdefended, but damn was I wrong.

I was surprised when making my move on the place as I got flanked from both sides and about cut to pieces. My plan now is to completely confound them by making my way to one of their more heavily defended outposts. At least according to their map, and taking that one on. Rationale behind that is with the amount of people they mobilized to take me out at the other place this one shouldn’t be as defended.

I haven’t worked out the complete logistics of my attack plan as I am still a few days out from the new target. One thing I can say for certain is I'm going to blow the hell out of the place like I did the last and let every zombie around come on in to finish the carnage. The biggest worry I have with this plan is those damn radioactive zombies coming along and ruining it, as they have an uncanny knack to stumble upon places I have been.

They are damn tough to take down with how quick they move. Still a bullet to the head takes care of them all the same. I'm in the process of coming up with traps that could possibly work to either slow down, kill or trap them so maybe if any bandits come along they will fall into the trap as well.

On a positive note my zombie body has finally fully recovered and healed itself after all the injuries I got from the past few battles. Don’t know how it's regenerating since being part zombie, but I'm not complaining either. Could be that's why the super-ish zombies are after me--perhaps they smell something on me or can sense I am different. I still can’t figure that one out. l'll have to try and capture one of them and do some tests.

Until next week keep surviving...one way or another.
